The collection contains letters written to Patrick Henry Cabell as Superintendent of Schools for Nelson County, Va., from Caroline Anthony Cabell of Union Hill, William Henry Ruffner, Cornelia A. Stevens, and Norborne M. Thomas. There is also Cabell's 1877 appointment papers issued by the Virginia State Board of Education and an 1877 deed for land to be used for a school. Also included are census records (1872) of whites and blacks ages 5-21 in Nelson County; agreements (1874-1879) of teachers with the school board; and petitions (1879) to the school board. The bulk of the collection consists of teachers' reports (1873-1880) in nine school districts to the superintendent; reports (1876-1877) of Caroline Anthony Cabell concerning a black school at Union Hill; 1878 broadsides concerning the sale of public school books; and miscellany.
